What is VOCAL?

Vocal is an organisation which provides assistance to victims of crime.

VOCAL A.C.T has been providing support for victims of crime since 1988. It was founded by eight survivors who, through their own traumatic experience, understand the plights of victims of crime (victims supporting victims).

Today this service is funded by the Department of Justice and Community Safety and it has a partnership with the Victims Services Scheme (VSS).

It is however managed independently by a management committee of twelve volunteers. An administration officer and a social worker are the paid staff.

VOCAL also has a staff of trained volunteers who are closely supervised to provide victims with ongoing support and practical help. Our volunteer counsellors are recruited among professionals with counselling qualifications.

VOCAL provides the following services:

  • training and support for volunteer workers
  • help with applying for Financial Assistance (previously called Criminal Injuries Compensation)
  • assistance to write your Victim Impact Statement
  • an outreach and onsite support service
  • counselling and support for victims who are not eligible for services from the ACT Government Victim Services Scheme (VSS)
  • practical assistance as needed in various ways
  • a 24-hour telephone support service
  • information, emotional support and in some instances outreach services.
